Hage Mukwendje

Hage Mukwendje (s. 1990, Pohjois-Namibia) on Windhoekissa asuva namibialainen nykytaiteilija, joka tunnetaan rohkeasta tarinankerronnasta ja sekatekniikka teoksistaan. Mukwendje on valmistunut Windhoekin taidekorkeakoulusta (COTA).

Mukwendje’s artistry is rooted in storytelling, whether through painting, mixed media, or a fusion of various forms, aiming to translate emotions and narratives into visual forms.”

Hage Mukwendje (b. 1990, northern Namibia) is a Namibian contemporary artist based in Windhoek, celebrated for his bold storytelling and mixed-media compositions. A graduate of the College of the Arts (COTA) in Windhoek, Mukwendje transforms lived experience into layered visual narratives that explore identity, memory, and perception.

Despite being colourblind, Mukwendje defies expectation through a vibrant and expressive visual language that blends painting, collage, and symbolism. His work bridges traditional Namibian aesthetics with global contemporary influences, shaped by international residencies such as Akademie Schloss Solitude in Germany (2021).

Each artwork functions as both a personal meditation and a broader commentary on cultural resilience and emotional complexity. Through experimental forms and textured surfaces, he creates deeply emotive pieces that challenge conventional visual storytelling and offer alternative ways of seeing.

I am a Namibian visual artist based in Windhoek, working with painting and collage to explore identity, memory, and presence. Raised in Okalongo, a rural village in northern Namibia, I was shaped by oral storytelling traditions that continue to influence my practice.

My work combines acrylic, recycled materials, and found objects to create portraits where fragments become faces—reflecting how identities are built through accumulation and transformation. Being colour-blind has led me to focus on contrast, texture, and composition, using these elements to propose another way of seeing that values depth over appearance. Through my art, I seek to restore visibility to what risks being forgotten, turning beauty into a form of care and resistance. I studied at the College of the Arts (COTA) in Windhoek.
