Withoos meets Withoos
17.9.- 6.10.2026 | Tila 1, Galleria G12
Following the exhibition in Sinebrychoffmuseum ‘Peacock in the Garden’ Mathias Withoos and Rome 24-09-2026 / 10-01-2027 https://sinebrychoffintaidemuseo.fi/en/exhibitions/the-peacock-in-the-garden-mathias-withoos-and-rome/ where 2 works by contemporary descendant Hans Withoos are also shown, Galerie G12 presents a solo exhibition of a more extensive collection by this contemporary artist.
In the series Withoos meets Withoos, the artist engages in a visual dialogue with his distant ancestor, the 17th-century master painter Mathias Withoos. By combining classical still lifes and cityscapes with contemporary, surreal imagery, Hans Withoos brings past and present together. The addition of models, flowers, butterflies, and birds breathes new life into the compositions, creating intriguing encounters between two artists separated by centuries.
Hans Withoos is a born romantic with a deep fascination for beauty in all its forms. Inclusivity plays a central role in his work. His photographic paintings are richly layered and evoke an alienating, otherworldly aesthetic. As a visual storyteller, Withoos creates unique dream worlds filled with colour and richness, full of hope and positivity. His work can be described as Magical Realism—an art form in which the unreal appears as if it could truly exist.
Born in Son en Breugel (1962), Hans Withoos studied textile design and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tilburg. He has lived and worked in Rotterdam since 1990. With a career spanning more than 35 years, his work has been exhibited internationally. Recent exhibitions include the Westfries Museum in Hoorn (2018), Museum Flehite in Amersfoort (2021–2022), Flower Art Museum in Aalsmeer (2024–2025), and the Stadhuismuseum Zierikzee (2025). His autonomous work has also been presented at international art fairs such as KunstRAI, PAN Amsterdam, SCOPE Miami, and VOLTA Basel. Hans is represented by international galeries in the Netherlands, Miami, Paris and Berlin.
Rotterdam is his home; the world is his workspace.
